Overview

When reporting speech at a later time, tenses usually backshift: present simple → past simple, present continuous → past continuous, past simple → past perfect, will → would, can → could, may → might. Backshift is optional when the reported information is still true or was said very recently.

The Backshift Rule

  • When the reporting verb is in the past, tenses normally shift back one step.
  • present → past
  • past → past perfect
  • will → would
  • can → could

When NOT to Backshift

  • No backshift needed when the statement is still true.
