Overview

Backshift is the process of moving tenses back by one step in reported speech: present simple → past simple, present perfect → past perfect, past simple → past perfect, will → would, can → could, must → had to. Backshift does not apply to past perfect, would, could, should, or might, as these cannot backshift further.

  • present continuous →past continuous: 'I am working' → he was working

  • past simple →past perfect: 'I went' → he said he had gone
